Welcome to Avon Valley Shotokan!

Shihan Ken Bainbridge started teaching karate in 1991 in Clackline.  Soon members of the group were entering competitions in Perth and progressing along the Shotokan Karate grading system.  News of this success reached Toodyay and Shihan Ken was invited to the CWA Hall to teach a group of enthusiastic locals - 60 people were waiting to be instructed in the art of Karate-do!  The group soon became known as the Clackline/Toodyay Karate Club.  As membership increased, classes were conducted in the Memorial Hall, then the Sports Pavilion and then, finally, the Toodyay Youth Hall which has been the permanent training “dojo” in Toodyay for over 10 years.  The Clackline group was based in the new Bakers Hill Community Recreation Centre but has now moved in to our custom made dojo in Clackline.  The club provides a number of separate training sessions per week, plus private lessons by arrangement.

Well over 600 community members have studied karate since the club began and 28 students have achieved their Black Belt diploma.

Our dedicated and qualified instructors offer weekly karate lessons suitable for all ages and all abilities, so no matter who you are or what your current martial art abilities are give us a call to arrange your FREE karate trial lesson and we're sure you wont be disappointed!

“The martial arts are ultimately self-knowledge. A punch or a kick is not to knock the hell out of the guy in front,

but to knock the hell out of your ego, your fear, or your hang-ups.”

- Bruce Lee

"Avon Valley Shotokan strive to teach good values through the martial arts as well as helping our students set and reach goals, and develop themselves as a whole person.  Karate can help children to build self esteem as well as self respect. Discipline, co-ordination, focus, confidence and of course fitness are all key aspects of participating in karate, and we just love watching our students learn and thrive in all these areas."
